This source was useful because it goes through the beginnings of grunge in Seattle. It also helps by talking about Hole, Courtney Love's band. It is a credible source as it comes from the database and it has its own bibliography. It also is not biased, as it doesn't lean one way or the other.
This source will fit in well in my report. It shows how grunge began in Seattle. I could use this in an opening paragraph or an intro. I could also use the information about hole to show what happened after Cobain's death.
Article 2: Berg, Timothy, et al. "1990s: Music." Bowling, Beatniks, and Bell-Bottoms: Pop Culture of 20th- and 21st-Century America. Ed. Cynthia Johnson and Lawrence W. Baker. 2nd ed. Vol. 5: 1980s-1990s. Detroit: UXL, 2012. 1369-1384. U.S. History in Context. Web. 18 May 2015.
The main purpose of this article is to show the music that was popular in the 90’s. However, my main focus was on Nirvana, along with other grunge groups during their time, and their impact on society and teenagers. The section i reviewed talked mainly about Nirvana, the band that ushered in an era of grunge music to the mainstream. They achieved this in 1991, when the Seattle, Washington trio released their second album, Nevermind, and their massive number one hit, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. the article also mentions the introduction to grunge and how it was not just a type of music, but it was also used to describe a general attitude towards life.
This article was very useful because it helped develop my thesis question. The article talks about the influence that it had on teenagers and the American youth. All of the sources are reliable, as it came with its own bibliography of sources used. it’s not biased, it is very informative without leaning one way or the other. The goal of this source is to inform the reader with the popular music at the time and show the impact it had on the youth.
This source helped me in many ways, as it was one of the first that i looked at while developing my thesis. It helped shape my work because it shows how the teenagers of the 1990’s were affected and influenced by grunge music at the time. I can use this article in many ways, as it doesn't just talk about the influence on teenagers, but it also goes into detail about the history of nirvana and Kurt Cobain’s suicide.
Article 3: Price, Shannon Bell. "Grunge." Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion. Ed. Valerie Steele. Vol. 2. Detroit: Charles Scribner's Sons, 2005. 153-155. U.S. History in Context. Web. 22 May 2015.\
The main focus of this article was on grunge and what it means. It covers the types of music, the sub cultural context, and the fashion that was involved. It mentions that grunge was fueled by self expression- sadness, loneliness, and was an unintentional movement. It also mentions the fashion, ripped and faded jeans and flannel shirts were very popular.
This article was useful because it related to the culture of the genre rather than just the bands. It also went into the relations with teens deeper than article one. The information is reliable, as it came with a bibliography just like the first article. It's also not biased.
This article fits very well into my research. It ties very closely to my thesis question, as it shows the direct influence it had on the teenagers and popular crowds at the time. It helped to shape my argument because it shows how such bands as nirvana and pearl jam influenced teenagers in their moods and what types of clothes they wore.
Article 4: "Kurt Cobain." Newsmakers. Detroit: Gale, 1994. U.S. History in Context. Web. 22 May 2015.
The point of this article is to show the life of Nirvana's lead singer, Kurt Cobain. It goes over how he chronicled the angst and disaffection felt by the youth throughout the nation at the time. The article talks about his impact on the fashion world and how designers tried to copy his looks. It mentions his great commercial success and Nirvana's rise to the top of the music industry at the time. It also goes through his struggles later through life and his eventual suicide.
This article was helpful because it really puts his whole life into perspective. It gives me a new understanding for his actions. It may lack in information when compared to the other two articles, but it provides a thorough insight on Cobain's life. This source came from the database so it is credible. It's also not biased as it's a memoir of Kurt Cobain's life.
This source was helpful for me because it showed what led up to his downfall. It also talked about how fans knew of kurt's unhappiness. However, it was his ability to cope and to show it through his music and it was felt by so many disaffected young people. People saw him as his hero and this source shows how they were so shaken by his death.
